Conwy Valley Railway Museum

Museum | Betws-y-coed | Wales | United Kingdom

The Conwy Valley Railway Museum in Betws-y-Coed is a fascinating destination for train enthusiasts and families. Located in the picturesque village of Betws-y-Coed, it offers a variety of attractions that are interesting for both children and adults.

Main attractions:

Miniature Railway: One of the main attractions of the museum is the miniature railway, which takes visitors on an approximately 8 to 10-minute ride through beautifully landscaped grounds. During the summer months and on weekends, the ride is often pulled by a steam locomotive, making the experience even more authentic.

Model Railway Exhibits: Inside the museum, visitors can admire various model railway layouts, including the well-known dioramas by Jack Nelson, which depict detailed recreations of railway scenes.

Railway Shop and Gift Shop: The museum houses a well-stocked railway shop suitable for both beginners and enthusiasts, where model trains, accessories, and souvenirs can be purchased.

Buffet Car Café: For a break in between, the buffet car café is available, offering a selection of hot and cold foods. Please note that the café is currently undergoing renovation.

Additional activities:

Electric Tramway: Another attraction is the one-third scale electric tramway, which runs half a mile on the premises and is one of the few electric trams in Wales.

Self-driving Mini Cars and Toby Tram: For children, there is an area with self-driving mini cars and a Toby Tram, providing additional fun.

The Conwy Valley Railway Museum is an ideal place to learn more about the history of railways while having fun for the whole family.

Absolutely Lovely and a bargain to boot. Please visit this charming shop and take the train ride in particular. For adults and children alike it's just a lovely little experience.

Second visit in 2 years with my wife and children - there’ll definitely be more. One of the very best miniature train rides in the whole of the country - such a great layout through lovely gardens. A massive bargain as well - it’s a must that when visiting Betws-Y-Coed you don’t miss out on at least the train ride. The shop is ace for the kids and modelling enthusiasts alike. Haven’t been into the small museum but this seems great value for money - model railway layouts are great for kids to see and I’ve heard that the exhibits of the larger locomotives are awe-inspiring. This is a great place being run on a shoestring by retirees who can’t afford to pay for extra staff nor are able to appoint volunteers, and all (presumably) without lottery funding. Cafe closed but great food and drink options overlooking the museum in the railway station buildings. Perhaps some of the ruder reviewers could maybe show at least some understanding of this before leaving negative reviews that damage an already struggling business. Some of the model layouts don’t work, apparently it also needs bit of a dust…so what, it’s one of the cheapest afternoons out anywhere with plenty to see and do. If you want a sanitised day out then feel free to pay a lot more and choose not to support a couple of retirees who’d rather keep it running for families to enjoy than retire.

We went on a rainy school holiday day took 10 min to go round. Roof leaking buckets catching rain. 2 things worked door held up with screwdriver 6 of so £12 definitely not worth visiting

Be careful of the car park at the site. It’s expensive and didn’t show the expiry time clearly on the parking ticket. We paid for parking but still received a fine. Apparently, it recorded the entry and exit time of the car.

Beware the car park at the back! We paid a fiver to park and displayed our ticket, then received a £100 parking fine in the post because we left 15 mins after the ticket expired as one of the kids was injured. We were literally in the car park sorting plasters etc, didn't know it was camera monitored. Also, the price of the miniature train has increased to £3 per person. Other than that, lovely little train ride, cute old fashioned museum, dog friendly, worth a visit if you're in Betws.

Whilst its a nice friendly site it's very small. We drove from Liverpool expecting more. The train ride is good. It lasts about 9, minutes but from what we seen on the website we thought we could ride more than the one mknature train you could only keep the kids entertained for about an hour here Fast forward a few years to July 2024 and it's a shame to see it so run down and scruffy. Clearly money needs to be invested here badly. Sadly this is our last visit here as there's literally nothing here

Been going here for 20 plus years, with my son and daughters and now my grandson. However, I won't be going again. Parked in the car park at the side. Only paid for an hour, but I am a diabetic and had to go and get something to eat, my blood sugars went very low, which took us over the 1 hour. I forgot to pay and now have a £60 penalty to pay for it. So be careful

Seriously,... Looked like a place where they store their unwanted junk. I know it was only £2 but it wasnt even worth that, reapair the 80% of the displays that dont work may help, and clean the place once in a while.. Thats the first time in my life i have spent £2 and felt ripped off. 😂

Great experience and a nice day out with family and friends. Especially the kids enjoyed a lot. There is a small toy train only two seater for kids which can be accessed for only £1 for two kids. There is a small cafe which has a variety of foods and drinks to offer. There is a shop which offers a variety of souvineers and collectables. There is a dedicated parking available just for the railway, which has ample spaces. Right across the railway is the high street which has numerous shops which offer plenty of food and beverages and ice creams etc. Nice experience overall.

I'm afraid absolute junk. It's shown on 1 website as a free attraction, but it isn't. It's around 2 pounds entrance and hardly anything works inside. I agree with an earlier review from today, the ladies at the entrance were awful, so rude. They asked us twice how many children we had with us, and then proceeded to lean over the counter to check as we went in. I really wouldn't cheat them out of a couple of quid. The exhibits are old, dusty and nothing much works. It could be a lovely little place. The little train ride outside, that the earlier lady was accused of breaking, just didn't work at all- she didn't break it, and they charge a pound for the privilege! Very run down and needs a real good update and some staff trained in customer service.

Good little museum but the staff are terrible. We took my 2 year old son here today as he loves trains. Paid admission in to the museum spent £15 in the shop managed to swap change for a pound from somewhere so my son could use the miniature train only to find out the train wasn't working once we'd put the money in. There were us and a few other children wanting to use it but as it wasn't working I went in to tell the women working in the shop only to be accused of breaking it... I was accused of causing hundreds of pounds worth of damage to the little train. The long haired old woman was incredibly rude and we won't be coming again. Have told friends to avoid here due to this encounter. I hope this woman is told that she's caused your museum to miss out on custom because of her stinking attitude.

A real shame. I used to love it here as a child however, it looks as though nothing has been touched since 20 years ago! Museum is poor now as nothing works! The miniature railway is still good but there rarely seems to be steam engines running anymore. Needs some investment as this could become brilliant again with not much effort!

Highly recommend going for a ride on the train, for £2.50 per person you can’t go wrong! I was a bit apprehensive as some of the reviews mentioned that some of the models weren’t working, but most were running when I was there so don’t let this put you off.

The little train was very good value, the surrounding areas and village is beautiful. But the museum itself is in need of a clean, and a dust and a lot of updating! It's was only a few pound. But only one model train moved, it needs a really good redesign and updating. Such a shame as everything else in the area is super cute and quaint. This is just too outdated

Very pleasant museum. However, 3 stars because none of the museum railway demo's were working. Also, prices in the model shop were a bit dear.
